Castle at the Lower Rhine - etia no.: 108
An important medieval castle of the Rhineland but also one of the most significant buildings in Neo-Gothic style in North Rhine-Westphalia.
description:
No less a person than Ernst Friedrich Zwirner, the famous Cologne Cathedral architect, was commissioned by Nikolaus Johann van Steengracht in 1854 to rebuild the Castle. Zwirner sheathed the existing building with brickwork in the then fashionable neo-Gothic style, giving to the castle that unmistakable Romantic appearance which still distinguishes it today. The von Steengracht family also had the surrounding gardens refashioned in what was at that time called the 'mixed style' - such that the overall effect created by the castle and the gardens was one of a totally united piece of art.
Towards the end of the Second World War, the Castle suffered considerable damage and was subsequently allowed to fall into decay. It was not unti 1987 that work commenced on clearing the rubble and rendering the building safe in preparation for the full restoration of this historical castle and its surrounding gardens. The Castle is today classified as a historical monument.
In 1990 the Castle Museum foundation was established and after many years of restoration work the castle was finally opened to the public as a museum of modern art housing the former private collection of the van der Grinten brothers.
The museum offers as well the Joseph Beuys Archive, an institute of international renown which, in collaboration with the Düsseldorf Art Academy, conducts research into the life and work of Joseph Beys.
